Danganronpa Trigger Happy Havoc Impressions

I’m currently playing a game called Danganronpa. It’s a very unique game (or visual novel) about 15 students who are trapped in an abandoned school by a bear-like psychopath. The only way for them to be freed is by killing at least one person and getting away with it.

Unlike other battle royale stories which revolve around being the last one to survive, in this story, you just have to kill one person without letting any other students know you’re the culprit. After a murder takes place, there will be a period of time for all the students to investigate the crime scene and search for all the evidences. Then, the ‘class trial’ starts.

The class trial is basically all the students gather together and discuss who the culprit is. By the end of the trial, they all have to vote who the culprit might be and if they vote correctly, the culprit will be executed but if they vote wrong, all of them, except the culprit will be executed. The culprit will then be freed. Now I personally think this is much more interesting than the classic battle royale.

The gameplay is… well it’s worth noting that this game is more of a visual novel than a game. You play as Makoto Naegi, the main character. You talk to different characters to learn about them and gain their trust. During the investigation period, you are free to explore the school ground, investigate what needs to be investigated and talk with people to get more information. Then, there’s the class trial which I think is the best part of the game.

During the class trial, all the students are required to form their arguments. They will talk non-stop one after another. You as the player and the main character has to pin-point their weak or contradicting arguments. Once discovered, you shoot their speech with your ‘truth bullet’. Do that a couple of times until the culprit is revealed and you win the trial. Of course, there is more to it than that but that’s the basic gist of it.

The story is pretty good so far. I’m currently at the end of chapter 2 and 5 people died so far. The murders are also very interesting. When you conduct your investigation, you naturally create your own theory based on the evidence and information you found. But it’s only during the class trial when other characters also make their own arguments based on what they found that the truth is revealed. You will find that your initial theory is wrong at this point. And that’s what I like about this game. It’s, to me, unpredictable. The secret of the school is yet to be found, which makes the story all the more intriguing.

This game is great. It’s also fairly cheap especially when it’s on sale. I highly recommend buying this game. Now then, let me continue playing this beautiful game.

    • The game feels more like being a detective, paying extra attention to what’s going on and try to pin point statements of other characters. It’s to me, a lot of fun. I only watched the first episode of the anime but does feel less entertaining that all the clues and answers are just given to you.
