Psycho-pass to me is one of the most intense and thrilling anime I’ve ever seen. Its world building is great, the story element sprinkled with mystery is phenomenal and the characters are well-developed. I really like how Akane develops from season 1 to season 2 and then the movie. She’s a really good and admirable character.
One scene that I find really intense is when Akane is trying to save her friend, Funahara from getting her throat sliced by Makishima Shogo. During the scene, it’s the first time she encounters a person who is criminally asymptomatic, meaning that the cymatic scans will always judge the person as below 100 which is safe and not a threat. It’s the first time she confronts a criminal alone without any other inspectors nor enforcers to back her up. To top it all off, her best friend’s life is in on the line and she’s the only one who could turn the table. It’s a very stressful situation for her to be in and for us, it’s a very intense and thrilling scene to watch.
Shogo gives her the chance to kill him by firing him using a gun that uses gun-powder instead of the Sybil System. At that moment, Akane has to make a choice of whether to ‘break the law’ by refusing to submit to sybil’s judgment and kill Shogo or to submit to Sybil’s judgement and kills off her friend. For an inspector who puts almost absolute trust on the Sybil system, as it has proven time and time again that it is perfect and has given the Japanese people peace that can never be imagined by any other civilization, that is a very difficult decision to make.
From an audience point of view, most of us just want her to pull the trigger and kill him. And quite frankly, that’s exactly what she did. She pulled the trigger. Twice. And also missed twice. Shogo interprets her action as being too hesitant to make a real decision, not having enough will to ‘do what she thought was right’. For this reason, he cuts Funahara’s throat.
I love this moment. This is one of the few moments of anime where I’ll probably remember forever. It makes it better because this particular event elevates Akane’s character pretty drastically. This is scene is really intense to me and the anime is one of the best I’ve seen so far. Because of this, I think it’s only fair to include the best moment of the anime in the 12 days of anime project.
That’s it from me for today, see you tomorrow!
