Kiss Him, Not Me: Kae’s Obsession Towards Yaoi

Kiss Him Not Me 4.png

This series is about a horizontally challenged girl who is way too obsessed with the otaku culture especially yaoi. One day, her favourite character of an anime died which led her to a state of depression. She doesn’t go out of her room for a week and of course also doesn’t eat. After a week, she finally went out of her room and after she looks herself in the mirror, she finds out that she’s now HOT AS HELL. And so, that’s when the story starts.

I was actually attracted to this series when I heard that the main character transforms her appearance drastically because of her depression. I find it funny (I’m so sorry for those who are genuinely depressed). Now this series is mostly comedic and it relies almost entirely on the fact that Kae, the main character is obsessed with yaoi.

Kiss Him Not Me 3

Personally, I’m not into yaoi myself but her genuine passion towards what she loves managed to pull me in. I’m also not into a reverse harem anime. I think this is the… second reverse harem anime that I watched (the first is Yona of the Dawn) and I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Kae’s fangirling about any yaoi ships is to me the best thing about this anime. Her screams and yelling while fangirling is just so adorable (I watched the dub just so you know). I know, it’s supposed to be downright annoying but she shows so much excitement and devotion towards what she loves which makes other people who doesn’t particularly like what she loves, loves it. She’s just so delightful when fangirling. I mean, it’s almost like she could be talking about literal shit but I would still love to watch her talk about it…

Kiss Him Not Me 2

Sh usually fangirls with her friend Amane but after she becomes friends with the boys, she makes them involved semi-voluntarily. After some time, Shima also joins the group. I find it hilarious when she asks her male friends to do… questionable things like posing for a picture. It’s also very funny when the boys finally understands what it means if a character’s name come up first in a ship between two people. Since they are not otaku, they have a really hard time trying to understand Kae’s explanation about various things she fangirls about. But like I said, Kae’s passion dilute pretty much every negative vibe and everybody just appreciates the moment.

When I watch any harem anime, like everybody else, I usually pick one girl to nominate her for my personal best girl award. I’m pretty sure I do this in almost every anime though. However, this anime requires me to pick a best boy. I NEVER actually thought about picking a best boy but since this is a reverse harem anime, I feel obliged to choose one. So who do I choose? Well…. I haven’t chosen one. But I can take one person out of the equation. The person is the Shima. Why? Firstly because she’s a girl. Secondly, I can’t see her and Kae past the platonic relationship. Logically speaking, they’re soulmates when it comes to their obsession and hobby but not compatible when it comes to being romantic partner. At least, I can’t see them together. If I REALLY have to pick, I’d probably pick Nana because… tsundere. But his flaw is that his love for Kae is very superficial. I honestly can’t pick any of them.

Kiss Him Not Me

Overall I really enjoyed this anime. It’s surprising though because I never thought of watching this kind of anime to be honest but I’m glad I enjoyed it. If most reverse harem anime is like this, then yea I’ll probably enjoy them too. I heard that the manga is finished and Kae actually ends up with someone so that’s pretty interesting. I’ll most probably check out the manga too.

With that said, thank you for reading and goodbye for now ~
